I got my GC after 6 years of application and 10 years arrival. Initially the GC was not a goal, probably a mistake.Later on it felt like it was hampering my dreams. With the passage of some more time, realized that dreams were not really dependent on the GC, but it was a nice crutch. Getting the GC does bring about some stability brought about by the job flexibility, but the lack of one did not prevent me from changing jobs, marrying, having kids, buying a home, or searching for better opportunities. I really can't say, I lost a good opportunity because I did not have a GC, but I did use it as an excuse.
Nevertheless, not a look a gift horse in the mouth, the GC was a much awaited event and milestone. I am now officially an immigrant, and I did open a champagne bottle on that day and have a dinner out with the family.
- Any advice for everyone?
It is easy to give this, since it would no longer apply to me, nevertheless, I would advice one to plan one's life without the feeling of entitlement and the understanding that the GC in itself will not change your life by a whole lot(it will have a lot of impact for some, but on average, lives for most will go on) . I read that most would-be immigrants are differentiating themselves as an 'illigal' or a 'legal' immigrant. People are forgetting that legal or illegal both are immigrant and want to have a better life for themselves or for their family compare to what their own country have to offer to them. Where is the difference - look deep into your heart - difference is one has some additional pieces of papers while other does not. Stop differentiating! Start uniting and fight for the justice.
I have not done my research on the "Dream act" and thus would refrain from speaking on it (I am all for sparing the kids from hardship though)...but I take strong exception to your comment above. I pride myself to be a legal immigrant...and frankly any person who flaunts the law of the land, disgusts me.
I have spent thousands of dollars and hours to maintain my legal documents that you so casually refer to as "pieces of paper". I have sacrificed my career to a certain extent for those "pieces of paper". I have put my married life on peril for those "pieces of paper". But I am proud of it, 'coz those pieces of paper differentiate me from a Criminal.
The only reason I joined IV was that this is for LEGAL immigrants and for folks who have followed the law, however discriminating it might seem.
Again this comment is not on the merits of the dream act, but on the comments you made. Remember Immigrating to US is not your/my right.

My PD is years after you folks.. just wanted to wish you good luck!
Calling all EB3 INDIA applicants with a PD before October 1, 2001.
Friends we have been current since November 1st of this year. Many of us still have not heard anything about our cases. If you have this PD you have already been waiting over 7 yrs. What should we do to get USCIS's attention to look at our cases. It seems service requests are useless. They send the same old letter to everyone and thesere is no action. Whats our best options. Lets gather and look at ideas on what we can do. We know USCIS is so random.
Friends this is very imp for us. We have already suffered the most and are the most behind in dates compared to any other Category and country. We waited in pain and silence for years for our PD to become current. Now it finally is but still we see no action. Guys speak up lets try to do all we can. In this economy last thing we need is a waste of our 7 yrs of waiting and our files falling through some crack because of a random USCIS process.

I guess most of the folks here are busy preparing to apply for 485. I have different problem here.
My employer's attorney is charging me outrageous fees of around $5000 to
apply for 485, AP and EAD for me and my spouse. This excludes USCIS fees. I work on hourly basis, so I should be taking care of immigration fees. My employer is not allowing me to file through another law firm.
Do I have any other options. How much do they charge usually.
Get a approval notice for I-140 and file I-485 urself, if I-140 not approved then get the receipt number and file urself

I and my wife applied for I485(EB3) in July 2007. We both have got our EADs, but not used it.
My H1 is valid till May 2009. I have I140 approved and have got my H1(3 years) till May 2009.
My wife has her own H1b valid till Dec 2008.
We are planning to get divorced. i have applied for Divorce in India in this month (may 2008).
Is there a way I can cancel my 485 application. Because If i get my green card it will be difficult for me to marry girl from India.

yesetrday on CNN, AC 360, there were two latino ladies (US Citizens) and they kept saying that this bill is illegal and should be vetoed.
All latinos want other latinos to come to USA and have the numbers/political influence to get them GC's via amnesty before legal immigrants.
None of those ladies said they did not support illegal immigration, they just kept ranting about racial profiling.

+1 for CGNY. We had gone for our daughters PIO card and had her with us - the consulate folks were extremely helpful and helped us through the process quickly so that our daughter wouldn't go through any discomfort in spite of a huge rush. We were in and out in less than 30 minutes of reaching the consulate (kudos to the security screener especially who spotted us waiting in line and led us right in to the counter).
Everyone was also very friendly and professional. I do agree with the phone calls responsiveness - we had a hard time reaching someone on the phone for our queries.

Guys, please take attorney advise before rushing in to refile. Duplicate applications may create problems for you later on.
Imagine, given the huge retrogression how many countless times we will be refiling our EADs ad APs if we don't act now.
Many people are blissfully enjoying the fruits of labor of some very dedicated IV member who selflessly participated in San Jose rally and flower campaign. These efforts were instrumental in the July visa bulletin reversal. Isn't it time we all stood up for our rights and make a strategic impact through a legislative change rather then just be satisfied with a tactical July visa bulletin reversal win?
I can't talk enough about how vital it is for you to act now. Presidential race will kick in after October/ November time frame. Our window of opportunity is short. Lets help ourselves!

You cannot combine work and education for EB2 and for EB3 it must be so noted on the Labor Cert.

Education evaluation was not done for bachelors because the Labor only required masters. My attorney is planning to use 2 years of my experience to compensate for the additional 1 year of bachelors degree

a) Republican base is not you and me, in case you haven't noticed they either cater to big biz or to a specific "kind" of Americans.
b) Tea Party is basically opposed to many things including free trade and immigration. Like any other politician they might change when they have power, if they don't then hope things don't get worse.
c) Nikki Haley and Bobby Jindal don't represent us, they are American for all practical purposes. If anything they have distanced themselves from any indian heritage in their campaigns. Nothing to expect here.
d) Who is grassley who keeps making things tougher for us ? Not a democrat on last check.
e) In this era of high unemployment, of around 17% why would any party touch anything remotely connected to a despicable term called "H1B" ? Suicidal ?

When you make a call to the call center and find out some details which they don't know, they will open a service request for you. Some one apart from the call center people will reply to that service request. You will be receiving a response in mail.
